Course Communication
I don’t regularly check my e-mail. Do I have to?
Yes. Our courses require that you regularly check your email, which is the official means of communication at the University of Minnesota. You are responsible for any messages we may send out via e-mail. There are kiosks all around Campus and/or you also have free access to the student computer labs on Campus. If you are a non-University student, you automatically get a free account when you register for a class. Before using your e-mail account, you must initiate it at www.umn.edu/initiate.
What if I don’t use my University email account?
Our official correspondence will be sent to your University email account. You can set your forwarding preferences to send all your University emails to another email account. Simply go to http://www.umn.edu/dirtools, login with your x500, and click on “Set E-mail forwarding.”
Note: If you forward your U of MN account to a Hotmail or any other free web-based account, the account might fill up or block your emails. Please be sure to check this.

Do I have to read the course emails that are sent to me every week?
Yes – this is very important! Emails are our main form of communication with you, and you are responsible for knowing their content, which may include important announcements, study tips, reminders, test stats etc. in these emails.
Note: Please use GopherMail to view your course emails, so that you can view them correctly (they are sent as HTML formatted emails). Otherwise, you may need to view them in a web browser instead of your email client).
When I open up a course email, all I see is HTML code and an unable to read the message. What do I do?
Our messages may appear jumbled in your inbox. Because of this, there will be a link at the top of every message that will state:
“If you are unable to view the message below, please go to this link: http://courses.pharmacy.umn.edu/Phar1004/Emails/example.htm “
Click on the link to view an online version of the email newsletter.
I accidentally deleted an email. Can I access course emails somewhere?
Yes, you should reference the “Email Archive,” located on the homepage of your course Vista site. This archive is updated shortly after emails are sent and is available to you 24/7.
